Frequently Asked Questions

What is the meaning of "secular"?

Secular simply refers to any idea, belief, activity or institution that has no basis in theology or religion. While all atheists tend to be secular, not all secular people are atheists. Many devout believers are nonetheless defenders of secular government and chruch-state seperation.

What is an Atheist?

Atheism means “without theism”. In general, atheists are simply people who have found the arguments for God’s existence to be weak, unconvincing, poorly defined, or otherwise flawed.

Isn’t Atheism just another religion?

No. While atheists can unite around common goals and values, atheism itself has no doctrines, commandments, strictures or authorities. If atheism is a religion then abstinence is a sexual position.

Do you hate religious people?

No. Most of us have close friends and family members who are deeply religious. Secular people can be vocal critics of beliefs and ideas that they find damaging, dangerous, maladaptive or simply false. However, this should not be confused with hatred towards individuals.

Don’t we need religion to build peaceful and ethical societies?

No. Actually, the most peaceful and prosperous societies in world are also among the least religious. There is no evidence that religion is either necessary or sufficient to meet these goals. It is a hypothesis has been conclusively falsified.

Don’t people need religion for comfort and meaning?

No. While it is possible for a person to derive comfort or meaning from their religion, it is by no means the only option. People who live without religion can rely on friends, family, community, career, hobbies and wonder to live deeply fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Do I have to be an atheist to join the SSA or attend its events?

No. In fact, some of our members are themselves believers who support secularism. Our club is open to everyone and our events usually draw ideologically diverse crowds. Come see for yourself.
